Expedited Passport Renewal for Eligible Applicants (Form DS-82)
Applicants who qualify to renew their passport using Form DS-82 may request 48-hour passport agency processing when travel is urgent.
This service helps ensure renewal applications are prepared correctly and submitted without preventable delays.
48-hour processing refers to passport agency processing time only and does not include shipping.
You may qualify for passport renewal using Form DS-82 if your previous passport:
• was issued when you were age 16 or older
• was issued within the past 15 years
• is not damaged
• will be submitted with your renewal application
If you do not meet these requirements, you must apply using Form DS-11.

Renewal applications submitted using Form DS-82 follow a different process than new passport applications.
Unlike DS-11 applications, passport renewals generally do not require an acceptance appointment.
The renewal application and supporting documents must be properly prepared before submission.
The 48-hour processing window begins only after the application is received and accepted by the U.S. Passport Agency.
For a complete explanation of the timing, see:
→ 48-Hour Passport Processing
This service helps ensure that renewal applications enter passport agency processing without preventable delays.
Preparation typically includes:
• review of the DS-82 renewal application
• verification of passport eligibility for renewal
• confirmation of required documentation
• guidance on preparing the renewal package
• courier coordination when applicable
Final approval and issuance of a passport are determined solely by the U.S. Department of State.
Passport renewals may be delayed because of:
• incorrect DS-82 completion
• submitting a passport that is not eligible for renewal
• non-compliant passport photos
• missing documentation
Careful preparation helps ensure renewal applications meet passport agency requirements before submission.
