Check Your Passport Before You Travel

Do not wait until the last minute to check your passport.

For travel to countries in Europe’s Schengen Area, your U.S. passport generally must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area. Individual countries and airlines may have additional requirements, so travelers should always verify the rules for every country on their itinerary.

If your passport is expired, damaged, lost, stolen, or does not have enough remaining validity for your trip, you may need a new or renewed passport before departure.

Traveling to the Schengen Area

The Schengen Area includes many of the most frequently visited European destinations, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and others.

U.S. citizens traveling for tourism or business can generally visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without obtaining a traditional visa.

The European Entry/Exit System (EES) is now operating at Schengen external borders. U.S. travelers may have passport information, a facial image, fingerprints, and entry and exit information recorded when entering Europe. No advance EES application is required.

What About ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, known as ETIAS, is expected to begin later in 2026.

As of September 2026, ETIAS is not yet in operation. Travelers should follow official European Union guidance for the launch date and application requirements.

Traveling to the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has separate entry requirements from the Schengen Area.

U.S. citizens traveling to England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland for most short visits generally need a valid passport and a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) unless an exemption applies.
